Acuscope and Myopulse Explained
What is the Electro-Acuscope and Electro-Myopulse?
The Electro-Acuscope and Electro-Myopulse Therapy System is a non-invasive modality that utilizes ultra-low voltage microcurrent to respond to the specific requirements of the body. These instruments have been widely used to support a range of conditions and are particularly effective in reducing inflammation, swelling, and discomfort associated with tissue stress and athletic injury. In addition, the system has been utilized in cases involving complex or performance-limiting conditions, supporting recovery in situations that may otherwise be considered career-threatening, and often effective when nothing has worked in the past.
The Electro-Acuscope/Myopulse Therapy System consists of two FDA-approved instruments originally developed for human medical use. Since 1978, this technology has been utilized in hospitals, physical therapy clinics, and medical practices, and has a long history within sports medicine. Acuscope and Myopulse instruments have been used by leading sports medicine professionals and clinics, including applications in professional athletics. While historically recommended for orthopedic, neurologic, and arthritic discomfort, their use extends beyond pain management. In animal therapy, the Acuscope and Myopulse have been applied for over four decades to support recovery across a wide range of conditions and injuries.
When used on large and small animals, the instruments are specifically calibrated to account for higher metabolic rates compared to humans. The system’s computerized biofeedback circuitry detects abnormalities in nerve impulse activity and tissue resistance, then continuously adjusts its output through an infinitely variable square-wave signal(acuscope) and sinusoidal wave signal(myopulse). This self-regulating process allows the current to adapt in real time until more normalized electrical patterns are restored within the tissue. Real-time readings guide the practitioner in determining when an area has responded appropriately, allowing treatment to progress efficiently. This feedback-modulated approach ensures precision while minimizing the risk of overstimulation or cellular stress.
Electro-Acuscope
The Acuscope is fundamentally different from any other modality due to the use of a closed-loop biofeedback system. While standard TENS devices deliver a preset electrical output based on generalized settings, the Acuscope continuously measures the body’s neuromuscular and tissue responses in real time. The biofeedback capability allows the device to adjust its microcurrent output moment by moment based on what the tissue is actively communicating.
With direct access to the entire nervous system, the Acuscope detects abnormalities in nerve activity and tissue resistance, then automatically modifies the output to match the physiological needs of the area being treated. The Acuscope uses a square wave to interact at the cellular and neuromuscular level without overstimulation, providing the optimum environment to promote healing. As tissue function begins to normalize, the system self-corrects, ensuring the current remains appropriate throughout the session.
The result is a more targeted, adaptive, and efficient approach. By continuously adapting to the body’s signals, the Acuscope supports improved cellular communication, reduced inflammation, and optimized tissue repair, while minimizing the risk of over-treatment or unnecessary electrical stress.
Electro-Myopulse
The Myopulse is the companion instrument to the Acuscope and is used to complete the full range of the therapy system. It features a specialized sinusoidal waveform designed to provide direct access to soft and connective tissues, including muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, and periosteum, allowing focused support of these structures.
The Myopulse utilizes a biofeedback sysem to support normalization of the electromagnetic environment surrounding soft and connective tissue, complementing the Acuscope’s role in supporting nervous system regulation. Effective tissue repair and recovery depend on accurate communication from both the central and peripheral nervous systems. By supporting these signaling pathways, the Myopulse assists in normalizing tissue fiber function and accelerating the recovery process following injury, surgery, or athletic stress.
In addition, the Myopulse supports improved blood flow and circulation by addressing soft tissue restriction and tension that may contribute to vascular constriction. As tissue tone and function normalize, circulation and metabolic exchange are able to occur more efficiently. This makes the Myopulse an essential component of performance care, routine maintenance, and rehabilitation, ensuring each session is precisely adapted to the individual needs of the horse.
Acuscope & Myopulse vs other TENS
The Acuscope differs significantly from traditional TENS units through its use of a closed-loop biofeedback system with direct access to the nervous system. Unlike standard TENS devices, which deliver preset electrical output without responding to tissue feedback, the Acuscope continuously communicates with the body by reading nerve impulse activity in real time. This allows the system to interact directly with the neuromuscular system and adjust its microcurrent output based on the nervous system’s response.
As the Acuscope detects changes in nerve signaling and tissue resistance, it automatically modifies its output to match the physiological needs of the area being treated. This adaptive biofeedback loop allows the therapy to work at the cellular and neuromuscular level without forcing a response or overstimulating tissue. As electrical communication within the tissue normalizes, the system self-corrects, ensuring precision and balance throughout the session.
Traditional TENS units operate in an open-loop system and are designed primarily to mask pain by overriding sensory signals. In contrast, the Acuscope’s direct interaction with the nervous system supports normalized nerve signaling, improved cellular communication, reduced inflammation, and optimized tissue repair. This targeted, responsive approach allows for a more accurate and efficient treatment while minimizing the risk of over-treatment or unnecessary electrical stress.
The Importance of Correct Calibration and Training
“Animal Therapy Systems is the ONLY Animal Calibrated Electro-Acuscope/Myopulse Therapy SystemPresently, there are only two calibrations of these instruments available which are human calibrated instruments, and animal calibrated instruments.
While other distributors may tell you that it does not matter which calibration you use on animals, that is absolutely not true. This is due to the fact that the biofeedback system being used by the human-calibrated instruments is neither correct nor precise when interacting with animal tissue. The results and responses will not be nearly as effective as when the animal calibrated instruments are utilized, therefore the treatment is undoubtedly compromised when using a human calibrated instrument on animal tissue.
The animal calibrated Acuscope & Myoscope instruments far surpass the human instruments in their ability to fine tune the muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, and nervous system of the animal. The correct calibration is necessary in order to obtain faster, far-superior results with this therapy system. These instruments have been specifically designed to interface with animal anatomy as well as their unique metabolism and physiology.
In order to treat patients properly and optimize results, the calibration is a very important factor, and something that should definitely be taken into consideration when choosing a Certified Animal Acuscope Therapist to work on your animal, or when choosing to become an Animal Acuscope Therapist yourself. Animal Therapy Systems is also the pioneer and founder of the ORIGINAL Animal Acuscope Training/Certification Program.
